Find out how Jesus is constantly modeled through the deliverers of the Book of Judges. Today we look at the story of Deborah, Barak, Sisera, and Jael

Deborah The Female Judge

The story of Deborah plays out after a short time of peace Israel experienced when Ehud delivered Israel from Eglon. However, as the case continues to be throughout the Book of Judges, Israel does evil in the sight of God and He sends oppression upon them. During the days of Deborah the Judge, Israel cries out for deliverance and Deborah calls Barak into action.

Barak is a little reluctant to go to war against 900 iron chariots (tanks to them) under the tyrannical leader, Sisera. But after agreeing to join him in battle Deborah was able to lead Barak to gather 10,000 men to Mount Tabor where a battle at the Valley of Armageddon would take place.

According to the Song of Deborah, rain falls while Sisera’s iron chariots are still in the Kishon River rendering them useless. Sisera flees and Barak pursues while his army decimates the army of the Canaanites.

Sisera then seeks refuge in the camp of an old ally not knowing that allegiance had changed. Jael offers Sisera milk and a place to rest, then summarily drives a tent-stake through his head. This ultimately leads to Israel’s deliverance from King Jabin of Canaan.

This obscure battle story actually is a great model for The Holy Spirit, Jesus, sin, and our ultimate triumph over the flesh. Tune in to find out how!
